“DRUMLINE; Where Magic Meets Music (A 6-month review)”
On the 21st of July 2023, the magical euphony of Drumline was released. Yes! It’s been over 6 months since Wizard Chan and 01FRNCH teamed up to create this music madness! Six months and we still get the jitters, with every listen feeling brand new like no time has passed. We’re on a quest to experience that feeling again, so join us on our walk down memory lane, to the land of musical amazement.
Taking the name to heart and center, Drumline surfaces from the first second with energetic beats, a celebration of drums that gears us into the music, with 01FRNCH Firing up the Chan energy. The sync and symmetry between the artist (Wizard Chan) and producer (Fr3nch) are hard to miss. Chants from the artiste follow, 20 seconds in and the next 54 seconds of the track leave us to digest the music, as the heavy drums meet the melody, the strong rhythmic claps follow and finally, a descent into a place of expression.
Just as the song proclaims, the “beats of the drum”, signify a call to gear up and get ready for war. The war here is a figurative expression of preparing for a mental battle. A battle with thoughts, losses, flaws, and the drive to stay afloat. But more than just war with the mind, Drumline also preaches of guarding oneself, because what we fail to see oftentimes is that the enemy is within us. When we hinder our growth and progression, we are our enemies.
This is why, for Wizard Chan the aim or message he wishes to convey, “is to prepare for the mind games and the actual reality of navigating through life.” He urges us to treat life like it’s a war, as it is the only way to win at it.
Drumline holds in it an energetic and fulfilling feeling. It Is an uplifting call to action, soulful, an almost spiritual experience. Every piece of sound and musical notes are celebrated and appreciated immensely; from the chanting vocals to the melodies, and the subliminal syncopations, it is A perfect mix of modernity and tradition, and the Earth song star shares a piece of him and his experiences with us. Loving the chants just as much as we do, his favorite part of the song is the recurring “Akwaaala EHHHH”. The word Akwaala means drums and as it is belted in the music, it is like a fiery command to keep the heated drums going.
Drumline is a song of strength and drum after drum, it captures perfectly the feeling of an awakening, to face life toughly.
Both music maestros have also worked on a couple of songs together. For 01FRNCH, working with Wizard is usually an interesting venture, as they have an understanding that makes it easy to bounce ideas off each other. This mutual understanding led to a beat he felt he had to share with Wizard Chan and is now the music madness we hear today! 6 months later and it is still impossible to get over.
