Hi there, Sonic reader. Welcome to our last ‘Artistes of the Week’ recs for September. Today (and always) we bring you hot new releases from the streets of African music and beyond.
Olakira & Potable -Partey
We sure do like an unforeseeable collab and Olakira & Portable give us quite the surprise with their new single, ‘Partey’. Olakira is a Nigerian Afrobeat producer, composer, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His music is categorized as a smooth Afro-fusion of Dancehall and Afro-pop. The ‘In my Maserati’ star teams up with Portable on this Afrobeat partey anthem. The song is all about enjoyment, ‘popping bottles’ and all the good things that come with a good night out. It promises to keep you turned up.
Odunsi (the Engine): Back in Office
Odunsi (The Engine) makes a nasty comeback into the music scene with his new Afro-fusion song, ‘Back in Office’. One thing about the artiste is that his sound is bound to take you on a journey of pure auditory pleasure and bliss, always. In ‘Back in Office’, his soulful vocals, a whisper, stacks as a perfect welcoming contrast to the slightly upbeat and dreamy music. After a brief hiatus, Odunsi has cooked and is no doubt, ‘Back in Office’ and you don’t want to miss out on this hot new single.
Major AJ: Badboy Major EP
Major AJ has just released his new EP ‘Badboy Major’ and it is quite the head turner as the jams keep coming through, track after track. The first song ‘Omo Ologo’ carries the energy of Ajebo hustlers and the spirit of Asake yet still maintaining the beauty and artistry of Major AJ. We’re also stunned by the track ‘Kere’ which features fellow Afrobeats artist Crayon and promises to be a solid hit! This EP more than proves his diversity as an artist and it is truly a work well done, every song is a different genre each with its unique style. Just like us, we’re sure you’ll struggle with picking a favourite as well ‘cus ‘the gbedu just dey flow’. Promising to leave you in high spirits, check out ‘Badboy Major’.
Kelvyn Boy & Lasmid: Man Down
Kelvyn boy and Lasmid work on this sweet new afropop single called ‘Man Down’. Kelvyn boy is Africa’s fast-rising music star, fresh from Ghanaian soil, and Lasmid as well is deemed to be one of the fastest-rising voices in the new crop of Western African talents, breaking boundaries and setting global records. The music is a completely addictive, seamless flow and the two Ghanaian stars complement each other well, spitting bars and passing the music back and forth like a hot curve ball. Tribe Boyz: Bad Boyz 4 L
Tribe Boyz is a collective group of dynamic Hip-hop artists from Lagos, Nigeria. More than just a collective, Tribe Boyz is a mosaic of talent comprising rappers, singers, and a diverse array of creatives with a collaborative spirit that helps to bring the different artistic perspectives to a harmonious ground. Their music defies easy classification and spans a spectrum of Hip-hop, Trap, Drill, Afro-swing, RnB, and Afrobeats. Tim Lyre: I Do
Tim Lyre releases a new lover boy anthem called, ‘I do’. The Afro-fusion singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, hails from Lagos State, Nigeria. His music is a genre-bending exploration of the human experience from an Afro-fusion perspective and is inspired as much by the likes of legendary musicians like the juju singer, Ebenezer Obey and the R&B polymath, John Legend. Tim Lyre, is undeniably an integral part of Nigeria’s alte Renaissance and is constantly weaving outer-national poetry through word and sound. Check out his newest music release; ‘I Do’.
